Butler to sign with Saints

Free-agent linebacker Victor Butler visited the New Orleans Saints facility on March 22nd. Less than a week later, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the linebacker will sign with the team.

The 6-foot-2, 245 pound linebacker has recorded 69 tackles, 11 sacks, and five forced fumbles in his four years in Dallas. He served as the backup for DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer.

Butler’s 2012 season as a backup was his best as he recorded 25 tackles, three sacks, and two forced fumbles. Butler is described as a solid speed pass rusher who can get after the quarterback.

Butler’s transition into the Saints new 3-4 defensive scheme should be nearly seamless. He played for defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in Dallas.

The 26-year-old has an edge with prior knowledge of Ryan’s scheme, but he will be expected to compete for the outside linebacker position with Martez Wilson, Junior Galette, and Will Smith.

Great, just 2 years, but I guess he wants to prove he deserves the big bucks later. I think this also that this will lessen the chance we will draft Mingo in the first round.

Who else thinks that we should look to move up a little in the draft and go after Lane Johnson OT from Oklahoma? Most drafts have him going to San Diego at 11, Miami at 12, or Carolina at 14.

Johnson could be just what we need at LT to protect Drew’s blind side.

Offer the Titans to swap their #10 pick for our pick plus a running back (PT or Ivory) plus a mid round 2014 pick. If we sign Asomugha at CB, maybe put Patrick Robinson in the trade rather than a running back.

I agree that it looks like Saints won’t go for Mingo, but it seems to me (IMO) that Saints want out of the first round altogether. They could get a good bit for the 15th overall pick. Personally I think Jarvis Jones would give that linebacking corps some credibility.

I highly doubt that the Saints could or would move up the draft board though. One of those great tackles would be nice addition to the offensive line though.
