With New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith set to count at around $14.5 million against the teams salary cap, it’s obvious to everyone including Smith that a contract restructure is needed to keep him in black and gold.  According to Yahoo! Sports reporter Jason Cole, that is said to be in the works.

Cole posted on Twitter yesterday that a deal is “Not done, but progressing.”  Another player lumped into a “must restructure” for the Saints along with Smith is linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

Head coach Sean Payton said weeks ago that Vilma does have a place with the new 3-4 scheme that defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will implement with the defensive unit.  Of course that’s all well and good for Payton to say but the $8.6 million cap hit for Vilma is the only issue.

If Vilma won’t restructure, then it’s likely he’ll be released in order to clear the cap space that the Saints desperately need.  However, I seriously doubt that he would not and should hear something on that front soon.

I agree, I think Vilma really wants to stay with the Saints. I don’t think many other teams would be interested as well.

I’m just glad the players understand the important of the cap space, Will Smith will be treated good because of the part he played by helping in the cap space. Taking a contract restructure that was a good move.

just don’t see a role for smith. He was regressing last year. In the 3-4 he’ll have to take double teams. We desperately need an upgrade there.

Sean Payton going to build this defensive team with the help of Rob Ryan, the way he built the offensive team.

Smith and Vilma will count 14.5 and 8.6 mill against the cap are you kidding me? Why restructure two old, declining skill players contracts? We have a new Defense, New Defensive Coordinator, and hopefully a new attitude.Release Smith, Vilma, and Harper, Sean P and Micky L and the cap situation is solve. These players will never fit Rob Ryan scheme. Bring some talented young blood to the defensive roster because after making history for being the worst in the NFL, all these overpaid garbage players should join Steve Spagnuolo. You see no one came knocking on his door after the Saints fired him. Lets move on and let s get a another championship to the BIG EASY. GEAUX SAINTS!!!!!
