New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith said to be "progressing" with a contract restructure

With New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith set to count at around $14.5 million against the teams salary cap, it’s obvious to everyone including Smith that a contract restructure is needed to keep him in black and gold.  According to Yahoo! Sports reporter Jason Cole, that is said to be in the works.

Cole posted on Twitter yesterday that a deal is “Not done, but progressing.”  Another player lumped into a “must restructure” for the Saints along with Smith is linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

Head coach Sean Payton said weeks ago that Vilma does have a place with the new 3-4 scheme that defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will implement with the defensive unit.  Of course that’s all well and good for Payton to say but the $8.6 million cap hit for Vilma is the only issue.

If Vilma won’t restructure, then it’s likely he’ll be released in order to clear the cap space that the Saints desperately need.  However, I seriously doubt that he would not and should hear something on that front soon.
