Followers of the New Orleans Saints have been doing just that for the past several weeks ever since Steve Spagnuolo was fired as the defensive coordinator. Who Dat faithful anxiously await the word on who his replacement will be and they shouldn’t have to wait much longer.
Yes it is quite puzzling why the Saints have waited to fill that coaching vacancy along with the offensive line position vacated by Aaron Kromer. Head coach Sean Payton said it would be a search that would have the utmost diligence and not do a hurried hire.
Another reason discussed this week was the simple fact that an announcement of the Saints defensive coordinator position, while not overshadowing it, would take away from the complete media attention dedicated to Super Bowl XLVII.
A bit of speculation involved in the wait is that there could possibly be a candidate that wasn’t able to be talked to due to that person being on one of the Super Bowl teams.
NOLA.com Saints beat writer Larry Holder actually mentioned over a week ago that San Francisco 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula could be on the Saints radar as the next possible defensive coordinator.
This could be a premium grab for the Black and Gold if it does happen since not only could Tomsula be a good fit, he would bring a wealth of knowledge to fix the lack of pass rush that the Saints defensive line has failed to generate on a consistent basis unlike the 49ers who are known for it.
Other names in running the Saints new 3-4 scheme are floating around still such as Romeo Crennel, Eric Mangini, Rob Ryan, and (also mentioned by Holder) 49ers secondary coach Ed Donatell.
Whomever it is, expect the Saints to be aggressive, but diligent, in talking to several candidates and make an announcement within the next week or so.
