Saints injure reserve RB Pierre Thomas to open roster spot; activate CB A.J. Davis

July 27, 2012; Metairie, LA, USA; New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston (12) battles cornerback A.J. Davis (20) for a catch during training camp at the team

The New Orleans Saints announced early this morning that they had placed running back Pierre Thomas on injured reserve that was most likely a move to simply open a roster spot to have some insurance for the depleted secondary.

Yes Thomas has been battling an irritating knee injury for the past several weeks but it wasn’t anything revealed to be too serious.  The Saints have running back Chris Ivory returning this Sunday and there is no need to push Thomas back in.

Why send him to injured reserve then?  With cornerback Jabari Greer out with a concussion, Elbert Mack is slated to take his spot at left cornerback and Johnny Patrick should slide to the nickel spot leaving no one in the wings to fill in if someone is injured.

The Saints used the spot vacated by Thomas on the roster to activate cornerback A.J. Davis from the practice squad.  Davis signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent this year out of Jacksonville State but was injured and then released only to be brought back later in the season.
