Saints add wide receiver Saalim Hakim to roster; place cornerback Corey White on IR

After previously placing safety Malcolm Jenkins and tackle Charles Brown on injured reserve over the weekend, the Saints have also announced that they have placed cornerback Corey White on the IR list as well.

White has been struggling to recover from a knee injury that he sustained against the Atlanta Falcons on November 11th.  White then missed the next few games before being active briefly on November 29th against the Falcons again.

No progress could be made with White’s injury and the Saints decided to place him on IR after seeing the playmaking ability of cornerback Elbert Mack who has been filling the spot left vacant by White.

To replace White on the roster, the Saints have activated wide receiver Saalim Hakim off of the practice squad.  Hakim is an undrafted free agent from Palomar College.

Hakim is the son of former NFL wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim who also played for the Saints in 2005.  However his father is best known for an event that almost rivals Steve Gleason’s blocked punt.

In a 2000 NFC Wild Card playoff game, Hakim was a member of the St. Louis Rams and was playing against the Saints.  In the closing minutes of the game Hakim stood ready to receive a punt after a Saints drive stalled.

Hakim however muffed the punt which was covered up by fullback Brian Milne and the Saints went on to win.  Saints radio announcer Jim Henderson screamed the now famous words, “Hakim drops the ball!  Hakim drops the ball!  There is a God after all!!”
