Marquis Johnson Lays Out To Pick Ryan Mallett

Marquis Johnson – Following Spagnuolo Towards Success

After two great defensive performances to begin the preseason, the New Orleans Saints have a lot to be happy about.  Allowing a total of 17 points through 2 games is quite impressive in my book, considering the Saints are normally a Run-and-Gun type team.  Marquis Johnson is just one player whom the Who Dat Nation should be happy to see on the field for the Saints this season.

Marquis Johnson‘s measurables are nothing eye popping, but he has shown himself to be a solid tactician and tackler thus far with the Saints.  Johnson stands a mere 5’11″ and is only 203 pounds.

Though he may not be the biggest guy, he must have been high on Steve Spagnuolo’s list, because New Orleans brought Marquis over at his request, to contribute in his new defensive scheme this offseason.

One wonderful thing about Spagnuolo in all of this is that he doesn’t build his defense around any one player.  He certainly cares little for tenure and status, and isn’t afraid to give any player time on the field based on performance.

At 24, having already played for Alabama collegiately, Johnson is a moldable and well-learned player.  He will benefit greatly from having to earn his snaps on the field, as he is listed as a fourth stringer at the moment.

Marquis Johnson had an athletic interception on a tipped ball Thursday night.  Just prior to the 2 minute warning, rookie Aikeem Hicks laid out Ryan Mallett and earned Hicks rave reviews for his motor.  Coming off his receiver to dive for the ball, Johnson demonstrated great skill, and it would be nice to see his defensive approach continue rub off on all the other Saints DBs.

Johnson has not started consistently since his Junior and Senior seasons at Alabama, and he could find his way towards more playing time with games like he had against the Patriots.  Though preseason games don’t always give much in the way of statistical analysis most of the time, I think the New Orleans Saints defense has a lot to look forward to this season.
