New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson attempts to purchase The Times-Picayune

New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson made an attempt to purchase the local New Orleans newspaper, The Times-Picayune but unfortunately there seems to be no interest from the the company Advance Publications.

Benson made a bid to purchase the newspaper no doubt in a good business and public relations move in a report today by WWLTV.com.  Benson currently owns FOX 8 WVUE -TV also based in New Orleans.

The Times-Picayune just a few months ago made an unpopular move by readers in deciding to release a large number of employee’s as well as announcing that they would cease being a daily publication and resort to being printed only three times per week.

This move was described by the company as a chance to move the Times-Picayune into a more web-based publication on it’s NOLA.com site which would alienate some readers who don’t have access to the internet.

Most readers have a feeling of nostalgia for the Picayune since during the Saints Super Bowl run in 2009, the paper has been responsible for some of the most iconic front page images that fans have been keeping as collector’s items.

Benson expressed his disappointment in the decision by the company in a letter shortly after showing his support for the newspaper.  WWL reported that Advance Publications officials stated “the paper is not for sale” but thanked Benson for his interest.
