The question remains, what do the New Orleans Saints do with the position? Do they give the job to the young Super Bowl hero, or do they go with the veteran presence of Kasay, who has proven himself time and time again?
Perhaps they will not choose, and will keep both. Having 2 kickers on an NFL roster is certainly not unheard of, as it is something the Saints have done in the past.
However, with the bounty scandal lingering like a black cloud over New Orleans, the consistency of having one established leader at the position may be the best bet.
The quickly approaching preseason will certainly go a long way in determining what the Saints will do. The few things we can be sure of are these: Hartley is still the Saints’ kicker of the future.
Youth is on his side, and in spite of John Kasay’s long-range success last season, Hartley does possess the stronger leg. Kasay’s advantage comes when discussing measured consistency, reliability, and durability – three things the Saints are in desperate need of, especially this year.
