The Carolina Panthers are hoping a change of scenery and a new quarterback are just what wide receiver Louis Murphy needs to finally become an impact player.
Carolina agreed to a trade with the Oakland Raiders for an undisclosed late round draft pick to acquire him today.
Murphy has been with the Raiders since 2009 when he was selected in the fourth round by the then Al Davis lead franchise.
In his first two sesons in the NFL Murphy posted 75 catches for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns.
Those are good numbers when you consider it was quarterback’s JaMarcus Russell, Bruce Gradkowksi, and Jason Campbell throwing him the ball
Last season he was slowed dramatically by a groin injury, starting in only one game making 15 catches for 241 total yards.
In Carolina, Murphy will be paired with Cam Newton, who not unlike Steve Smith, could re-ignite his still young career with Newton delivering him the ball.
Murphy will likely compete with Brandon LaFell and David Gettis for playing time as the number two, or three, wide receiver on the roster.
