After a curious move to release defensive tackle Luis Castillo, the San Diego Chargers have reached terms on a one-year contract with former New Orleans Saints nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin.
Castillo was the Chargers first round pick in 2005. He suffered a leg injury early last year and missed most of the 2011 season. He was re-signed by the Chargers on April 3rd, but the the team seemed to have decided a change was needed at the position.
Franklin joined the New Orleans Saints last year on a one-year deal after under-performing with the San Francisco 49ers under the franchise tag. Franklin lost his spot this year after the Saints acquired defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley from Denver and re-signed defensive tackle Remi Ayodele.
The move is great for Franklin who will be back in the 3-4 defensive scheme he enjoyed during his years in San Francisco and Baltimore. He will be competing for time with incumbent defensive tackle Antonio Garay and 2010 fifth round pick Cam Thomas.
