Daniel has never been given the opportunity to step up except during preseason or when the Saints had a comfortable lead going into the final part of the fourth quarter. Even when he did appear on the field, most of the plays were running or short passes.
And frankly even when Daniel did pass, it wasn’t the smooth, calculated plays we see Brees make with that cool confidence. It looks like that could change with the trial by fire Daniel is going through at the moment.
When the media was granted access to the OTA’s on Thursday, they noted that it was strange not seeing “#9″ on the field, but Daniel was handling the session well. Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune reported he actually scrambled for a potential 60 yard touchdown.
If Daniel is progressing at a high rate, it bodes well for the Saints in the fact that not only will they be secure with a back-up quarterback in case something would ever keep Brees out of a game or games, but for potential trade options.
Daniel is currently signed for another year, but the team could sign him to a multi-year contract next year and explore a trade option possibly with another team. It’s not totally inconceivable…Matt Flynn anyone?
