The New Orleans Saints got busy on the phones after the 2012 NFL Draft and got in touch with some promising undrafted free agents on Saturday afternoon.

The following list is undrafted free agents (UDFA) with some short notes that are reportedly going to sign with the Saints or attend the rookie mini-camp.  A “*” in the notes are clips from scouting reports.

Also this list is unofficial until the team actually confirms these signings.  Sometimes the UDFA will decide to commit with another NFL team before a contract is signed.

Jerico Nelson-Safety-Arkansas:  5-9, 203 pounds, 4.56 40 yd dash, bench pressed 15 reps, and a 33.5 inch  vertical jump.  Career stats:  268 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 4 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles.  Local prospect(Destrehan), visited Saints prior to draft.

Johnny Thomas-Safety-Oklahoma State:  5-10, 206 pounds, 4.63 40 yd dash, bench pressed 20 reps, 35.5 inch vertical jump.  *Good in run support, future starter, special teams contributor.  Career stats:  100 tackles, 3 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles.

Jose Gumbs-Safety-Monmouth:  5-10, 210 pounds, 4.40 40 yd dash, bench pressed 20 reps, 41 inch vertical jump.  Career stats:  4 interceptions. Visited Saints prior to draft.  *Good closing speed, run support, covers, open field tackler.

    Knowing how awesome our scouting staff is, I cannot wait to see one of these kids emerge… especially the big DT from Canada, DE (Broughton) and that CB/S from Arkansas.
    The RS is very interesting too…
    Maybe looking to take some wear and tear off Sproles.
    I’m guessing between the new kid, Roby and a healthy J. Morgan, we are looking at some competition in the ST/return/gunner position.
    Roby is getting a little long in the tooth anyway….
