That’s actually what struck me first about the pick when Nick Toon was called out, the fact that he comes from a “helluva” great football program. I’m a bit more familiar with this guy than many Saints fans might be, because we follow the Badgers at my site on account of my having a Green Bay Packers writer.
My Badgers writer Red lives in Wisconsin and follows the Badgers religiously, so one of the first things I did for him was to build him a Badgers board so he could write about his favorite college team. It worked out great for me because we got some more great college content and I learned a lot about Badgers football the last two seasons.
It was actually fun to root for another college football team than the LSU Tigers, but it helped that they never had to compete with one another directly.
Some of what I did learn about the Badgers is that they are a lot like the Saints. They don’t win games by defense as a rule, although they do have one heck of a defense. No, what they do best is score fast and score often. The Badgers were all about offense last season, and have been for a while. That one fact alone is enough to help Toon hit the turf running in New Orleans.
Expect a lot from this “big ‘ole boy”, he has the size to reach up & pull’em down, and the ability to make extra yards after the catch. Nick had some injury problems in his junior year but made up for it last season; he started all 13 games as a senior.
In Nick’s last season to wear the Badgers uniform he pulled down 64 catches for 926 yards and 10 touchdowns. I think Toon will fit in nicely into the power offense of the Saints, and expect him to do well competing against the other receivers for a starting job.
