The recent news coming from several sources about moves the New Orleans Saints are making has the smell of a possible deal very soon with quarterback Drew Brees.
CBSSports.com writer Larry Holder has stated that the Saints have restuctured linebacker Jonathan Vilma’s contract. Vilma was due to count almost $7.5 million dollars against the salary cap for the team this season.
This isn’t much of a shocker since the Saints are needing extra cap space to be able to sign Brees to a long term contract. Also, the news of possible sanctions against Vilma in the recent “pay for performance” investigation is looming.
Vilma recently said that he expects to be suspended anywhere from two to eight games by the NFL. A suspended player’s salary doesn’t count against the team’s cap for the length of his suspension.
This may sound like it will be “found” money for the club, but the addition to the Saints cap space wouldn’t begin until the first of the season. The restructure also probably gives Vilma some money up front for when he’s suspended.
With the restructure for Vilma and the contract extension for Jabari Greer, you would have to think that a deal for Brees is just around the corner, which is what Saints fans desperately want to hear right now.
