New Orleans Saints linebacker Vilma restructures contract; Brees deal coming soon?

The recent news coming from several sources about moves the New Orleans Saints are making has the smell of a possible deal very soon with quarterback Drew Brees.

CBSSports.com writer Larry Holder has stated that the Saints have restuctured linebacker Jonathan Vilma’s contract.  Vilma was due to count almost $7.5 million dollars against the salary cap for the team this season.

This isn’t much of a shocker since the Saints are needing extra cap space to be able to sign Brees to a long term contract.  Also, the news of possible sanctions against Vilma in the recent “pay for performance” investigation is looming.

Vilma recently said that he expects to be suspended anywhere from two to eight games by the NFL.  A suspended player’s salary doesn’t count against the team’s cap for the length of his suspension.

This may sound like it will be “found” money for the club, but the addition to the Saints cap space wouldn’t begin until the first of the season.  The restructure also probably gives Vilma some money up front for when he’s suspended.

With the restructure for Vilma and the contract extension for Jabari Greer, you would have to think that a deal for Brees is just around the corner, which is what Saints fans desperately want to hear right now.

New Orleans Saints fans just have a little more patients our team has been through somethings that cost us a little hurt. But everything going to be alright you’ll not along Drew Brees are our home boy to and we love him the NFL Commissioner knocked us down a little but GM Mickey Loomis is the brains he will make it happen. I want to thank Vilma for a great move he love Drew Brees as well the Saints has a united team they work together as one and I think Drew Brees will put back something on the table when he is signed. Vilma we as the New Orleans Saints fans wish you the best of luck hold your head up if they remove you for a little while you will be back on time to help take this Super Bowl Championship NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell trying to stop our Super Bowl win so Mr.Vilma help cheer the Saints on where ever you maybe.

@larryjames836 I feel the same way you do Larry. Goodie and his Mob have really shown their behinds  this off season. Not only with the Saints, but also to the people of Minn. Nothing would be sweeter, and I mean nothing, than to have him hand that Lombardi to Vitt and Benson in the Superdome at the end of this coming season. Loomis will get the deal done with Drew and all will be in place for a good run this season. Oh how I wish that I could be home this season…the Dome is going to be rocking. Win, lose, or draw we all bleed black and gold
