It could actually swing several ways with Vilma. The Saints have been extremely tight lipped when it comes to cutting players. And we’ve seen rookies as well as fan favorite veterans come and go just as easy.
It certainly doesn’t look good for Vilma with the signing of Lofton since the contract is for 5 years and not one or two. Also, the position that Lofton plays could edge Vilma out.
Lofton is considered a middle linebacker just as Vilma is. While Lofton could potentialy play multiple roles, I don’t know if I see him at anything other than in the middle.
Another black cloud hanging over Vilma is the suspensions that will be handed down from the NFL on the Saints “pay for performance” investigation. Vilma was the only player named for the Saints in the investigation so far.
As I stated in a previous article, considering head coach Sean Payton is suspended for a year it wouldn’t surprise me if Vilma is suspended for at least half the season if not the whole by Commissioner Roger Goodell as an example.
