New Orleans Saints and NFL: Top News and Video Clips

The Niners entered the Peyton Manning sweepstakes this week when coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman traveled to Durham, N.C. to watch Manning work out at Duke University. Even worse for Smith is that his own agent, Tom Condon, works for Manning as well. Smith now is considering changing agents, a league source told the San Francisco Chronicle on Saturday. NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reports that Smith has not yet interviewed any prospective new agents.

Say this about New Orleans Saints CB Jabari Greer: in a generation where football players express themselves through Twitter and Facebook, his old-school use of poetry definitely sets him apart. That much is clear in his Out of Bounds weekly blogs for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the latest of which is a poem, Untitled, referring to the ‘Bountygate’ scandal in which former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams paid his players cash bonuses for hits that knocked key offensive opponents from the game.

It appears the Ravens are still in the market for a replacement for Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs. Evan Mathis, whom the Ravens wined and dined on Thursday, Tweeted this shortly after 3 p.m.: “To all the Eagles fans who offered me various food and incentives to return… I’ve come to collect. #FLY” Moments later, ESPN reported that Mathis had agreed to a five-year, $25 million contract to remain with the Philadelphia Eagles. Mathis had his best NFL season to date in 2011, his first season in Philadelphia.

Note: UFA means unrestricted free agent; RFA means restricted free agent; ERFA means exclusive-rights free agent; FFA means franchised free agent. Any RFA or ERFA who was not tendered by his team became an unrestricted free agent as of March 13.

The Titans’ session unfolded in secret, but count Duke’s football coach, David Cutcliffe — who was Manning’s offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee — among those still buzzing over the quarterback’s workout for Denver’s brass on Friday. As part of an interview scheduled to air Saturday on “Total Access” (7 p.m. ET), Cutcliffe indicated to NFL Network’s Stacey Dales that Manning looked very much like the Manning of old.
