The fate of most New Orleans Saints free agents should be known soon

The Saints still have other free agents to retain and Loomis will need to be creative in order to keep key members.  Those creative steps have gone into motion already with the contract restructuring of defensive end Will Smith and guard Jahri Evans.

The money saved by doing this gave the Saints close to $7 million, the amount they have free now.  It’s expected that the same will be asked of linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis with their current contracts.

You can be sure that both of them have been put on notice that it could happen or could be on the phone with their agents and Loomis right now.  The other measure would to be to outright release Vilma if he won’t restructure.

While Saints fans have been waiting to hear about the fate of Brees’ contract status as well as Nicks, news has only been trickling slowly from the organization on a few players here and there.

Most recent was the re-signing of linebacker Jonathan Casillas and defensive end Turk McBride.  Most likely by late  tomorrow, we will know the fate of most of the Saints free agents as free agency begins Tuesday.
