Saints wide receiver Lance Moore and I shared the same thoughts when chatting shortly after the 2011 season as to what would happen if Drew Brees didn’t return to the team next season after Brees’ contract expires March 13. Fans. Torches. Protests. Chaos. Anarchy. A Brees exit from the Saints would make the previous departure of a New Orleans superstar — Chris Paul a couple of months ago — come off more like the departure of the middle sister from the 1990s TV series Family Matters: gone and forgotten like he never existed. That’s how much Brees means to the Saints organization and to the city of New Orleans.
Willie Roaf, who was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, played for the New Orleans Saints from 1993 through 2001. He then joined the Kansas City Chiefs and finished his career with them in 2005. In this radio interview, Roaf was asked, hypothetically, which hat he would wear if the Pro Football Hall of Fame required players to make that choice. While Roaf praised his Kansas City experience, his answer was pretty clear.
Cruz entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2010, and as such reportedly made $405,000 in 2011 as part of a three-year rookie contract. Although the salsa-dancing Cruz has signed one contract — a deal for marketing and endorsements with IMG — it’s a decent bet he’s looking for another based on what he did on the field.
Schwartz revealed the harsh truth of today’s NFL. “Perfect teams” do not always win Super Bowls. New York won a Super Bowl title despite being outscored 394-400 during the regular season. The Giants were a fifth seed in this year’s playoffs after finishing 9-7. Green Bay was a sixth seed when it won a Super Bowl title two years ago.
The Oakland Raiders sent a clear message to veteran players today — this is no longer Al Davis’ team — releasing corner back Stanford Routt less then a year after Davis signed the veteran to a lucrative five year $54.5 million dollar contract.
