After the New York Jets were eliminated in the playoffs yesterday, you knew that emotions would be high for the team. That feeling carried over as witnessed by the media following a final team meeting this morning.
It was a scene yesterday that would have been great to witness on HBO’s Hard Knocks series. The Jets faltered and one of their team captain’s was benched in a disappointing loss to the Miami Dolphins. Head Coach Rex Ryan is probably thankful that it wouldn’t be broadcast.
In a shocking move, WR Santonio Holmes was benched in the final moments of the game for an apparent fallout with his team in the huddle. Holmes was given the Offensive Team Captain honor by Ryan, a position that the players usually vote on. Holmes and Ryan both seemed evasive when asked and didn’t seem to know why it happened.
However, RB LaDainian Tomlinson spoke out saying that Holmes seemed to have lost his drive and competitive fire as the Jets were trying to rally for a comeback. As a captain, those duties fall to that player to be the one who stokes the fire to get their teammates going, not the other way around.
Tomlinson probably spoke very freely because it was more than likely his last game as a Jet. His contract is up and his duties went from being a starter a year ago to a third down back this year. He expressed he doesn’t know what he’ll do for the upcoming season.
Tomlinson says he just doesn’t want to sign with a team for money, rather he wants to go to a team that has a good chance of winning a championship. If things don’t pan out that way for him, he’s eluded to the possibility of retiring from the NFL.
