A 44 Year Saints Fan Re-examines The Term “Ain’ts”

Out of sight, out of mind? For 43 years one word that wasn’t really even a word has haunted Saints fans, and we finally succeeded in getting that bugaboo stuffed into a coffin and buried in 2009. Or did we? Is it going to come back and haunt us again?

44 years is less than half a century, yet it’s a long time for a team, a city, and an International fan base to wait for some stability in our team.

Perhaps a better way to start is to point out that the week before we played the finest game of football in the history of the New Orleans Saints. To follow that performance with the kind game we played against the Rams, is almost inexcusable.

If it sounds like I’m fussing, I’m not fussing as a sportswriter; I’m fussing as a fan. There’s a difference, you know. I’ve paid truckloads of dues as a Saints fan across the 44 years I have supported my team through thick and thin.

Most sportswriters can’t lay claim to the kind of dedication Saints fans have had.

I’ve waited three days to comment on that pitiful excuse for effort we made Sunday against the Rams.

On the one hand I could say that words escape me to describe my feelings about the game, but it’s more accurate to say that there are far too many that come close to describing that embarrassing Sunday. “Embarrassing” is a start for word 1. Combined in a phrase with “failure” the words abysmal, dismal, and pitiful come to mind as well.

I tell you what, I’m not going to drag this out. having said that, it’s time for the Saints team to collectively take a reality check. I don’t enjoy fussing at the team I love, besides, that’s a job best suited for Coach Payton, Joe Vitt, Pete Carmichael Jr., Joe Lombardi, Bret Ingalls, Curtis Johnson, Terry Malone, Aaron Kromer, Carter Sheridan, Greg Williams, Bill Johnson, Travis Jones, Tony Oden, Mike Mallory, Greg McMahon, and John Bonamego.

I expect each and every one of these coaches to set their respective players down and tell them that “We ‘Ain’t’ gonna lose like that again this season.”

…’cause I “Ain’t” gonna enjoy watching it happen.
