We are almost at the halfway point of the NFL season which means we are about due for a head coach to be fired. Last year there were four head coaches that lost their jobs during the season as Wade Phillips, Brad Childress, Josh McDaniels and Mike Singletary were fired. The first of those firings game in Week 8 last year so history tells us we could be due for the first firing this season.
Three Winless Teams
You have to start by looking at teams that are winless and look at their head coaches to see which coach could be the first to go. St. Louis, Indianapolis and Miami have yet to win a game heading into Week 8 so their coaches would seem to be on the hot seat. The first coach like to be out of a job is Miami’s Tony Sparano. He nearly lost his job in the off-season but the Dolphins couldn’t land Jim Harbaugh. It seems now only a matter of time before Sparano is gone.
The St. Louis Rams have been ravaged by injuries and they have had a tough schedule so it appears for now that head coach Steve Spagnuolo is safe but if things don’t get better in a hurry that could change. One advantage that Spagnuolo has is that he came in with general manager Billy Devaney so if one of them goes it is likely they will both get fired. The other winless team is Indianapolis and general manager Bill Polian has already said that head coach Jim Caldwell’s job is safe.
The Colts are blaming the lost season on Peyton Manning’s injury not on Caldwell’s coaching. Too bad they are wrong. Caldwell was a poor coach in college and he has not been a good coach in the NFL. He inherited Tony Dungy’s players and has relied upon Manning to lead the team. Now that Manning is hurt it is becoming obvious to everyone that Caldwell is not a good head coach.
If you had to make a choice in NFL betting on which coach would get fired first then Sparano would be the heavy favorite. It is surprising to some people that he is still on the job. Miami is a big underdog this week at the New York Giants so it doesn’t seem likely the Dolphins will get their first win of the season just yet.
