When Pierre joined the Saints in 2007 as a undrafted free agent from the University of Illinois , the cards were stacked against him. New Orleans was coming off of the teams most successful season in franchise history, having made it all the way to the NFC Championship game before losing to the Chicago Bears.
Pierre found himself with fan favorite Deuce McAllister and new comer Reggie Bush ahead of him on the depth chart, Pierre was a long shot at making the roster.
Through sheer determination and hard work Pierre overcame the odds. Playing well in preseason games had earned him a place on the team and he was one of only 2 undrafted rookies to make a NFL roster that season.
When Deuce McAllister went down with a torn ACL in his left knee mid season, Pierre knew it would be just a matter of time before his number was called, and when the Saints traveled to Chicago for a rematch with the bears, Thomas found himself making his first career start in front of a home town crowd.
Although the Saints came up short, Thomas battled through the freezing temperatures and blistering wind to turn in what was a record performance, finishing the game with 20 carries for 105 yards and 12 receptions for 121 yards.
