Drew Brees‘ agent Tom Condon is in town today to meet with the New Orleans Saints about Brees’ contract, according to a league source. So far the two sides have not been close to a new deal, so today’s face-to-face meeting between Condon and General Manager Mickey Loomis is intended to narrow the gap in their negotiations.

Despite losing 42-34 Thursday to the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said he didn’t second-guess his decision to give rookie Mark Ingram the ball with the game on the line.

Tom Dempsey’s 63-yard, game-winning boot is a lasting image of the Who Dat nation and one of the few bright spots in the team’s otherwise bleak history until the 2010 Super Bowl win. And now that record might be eclipsed.

Picking the top part of the first Daily News NFL Power Rankings of the 2011 season was easy. The Super Bowl champion Packers made sure of that with the first drive of Thursday night’s opener. Ditto for the No. 2 Ravens in the way they manhandled last year’s AFC Champion Steelers.

With the league’s new salary structure redistributing the mega-millions to vested veterans instead of first-year players, and encouraging the 2011 draft class to prove its worth, a slew of rookies distinguished themselves on the NFL’s opening weekend.
