The New England Patriots released Strong Safety Brandon Meriweather today and this might warrant some attention by the New Orleans Saints.
Meriweather was a 2007 first round pick for the Patriots and has been selected to the Pro Bowl in 2009 and 2010. Last season he recorded 68 tackles and 3 interceptions. For his career, he has 261 tackles, 12 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles, and 2 sacks.
The Saints already have a starting Strong Safety in Roman Harper but his current backup is listed as Jonathon Amaya. While Amaya has shown progress in training camp and preseason, his lack of experience is the only mark against him.
Meriweather would bring just that to a team that is in need of depth at the Strong Safety position. The only question is would he be willing to accept a backup position on a team interested in him?
Meriweather is known for his violent tackles on opponets. In a recent Sports Illustrated article, Meriweather stated he was taught to tackle by his uncle and cousin at an early age by hitting a punching bag that they suspended from a tree.
