The New Orleans Saints are making sure they are keeping things on special teams heading in the right direction as they re-sign one of their core contributors.
The Saints flagship station WWL 870 AM is reporting that DE Jeff Charleston has agreed to terms with the team and was seen coming out onto the field for evening practice.
Charleston has been a solid special teams player as well as a dependable backup defensive end when called upon by the Saints. Last season, Charleston registered 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles as a defensive end.
Charleston has become a fan favorite and developed a cult following by some. He started to carry the nickname given by fans, “The Vanilla Gorilla”, for his post sack celebration of dragging his knuckles and beating his chest while screaming.
This latest signing is another priority checkmark off the list for the Saints as they get closer to their first preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers on August 12. This means though that we’ll probably find out shortly that a player has also been released since the roster was reportedly at 90 man limit yesterday.
