Defensive tackle Remi Ayodele has agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings. Some may not be surprised about this as Ayodele took to his twitter account last night with a message, “Been a fun ride NOLA!!!”, indicating his time with the teams was coming to an end.
Ayodele has been primarily responsible for the Saints defense recent turn around after assuming the starting nose tackle postion alongside Sedrick Ellis the last two seasons. He appeared in 31 of 32 games making 29 starts with 39 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one pass deflection.
Last season fellow teammate Sedrick Ellis posted a career high six sacks, largely in part to Ayodele’s ability to soak up blockers in the middle of the defensive line.
The Saints signed veteran run stuffer Shaun Rogers earlier this year and it was assumed that Ayodele would lose his staring job to Rogers making him expendable. New Orleans has also signed bevy of defensive lineman to the roster this off-season.
Minnesota could desperatelty need Ayodele to step into a starting role week one of the regular season. The Vikings staring duo of defensive tackles, Kevin and Pat Williams, may face a suspension to start their year for a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy after ingesting StarCaps which contained Bumetanide.
Saints defensive end Will Smith is also in a similiar predictment and could be suspened for the teams first four games of 2011.
