New Orleans Saints Sign Rookie Defensive End Greg Romeus

The Saints announced Thursday they have signed their 7th round draft pick, Pittsburgh defensive end Greg Romeus, terms of the contract were not reported,

Romeus, 6-feet-5, 267, was regarded as one of the most dynamic defensive playmakers in the Big East Conference before a knee injury wiped out his senior season.

In 40 games and 28 starts for the Panthers, he racked up 19.5 sacks, 38.5 tackles for a loss, five forced fumbles, while recovering three, and one interception.

He is expected to compete on what should be a revamped defensive line for New Orleans. The club must cope with the expected four-game suspension of defensive end Will Smith.

Today defensive tackle Remi Ayodele signed a free agency contract with Minnesota. Players such as Jeff Charleston and Anthony Hargrove remain free agents at the moment also.

That means Romeus will be in a mix of newcomers that includes the Saints top overall draft pick, defensive end Cameron Jordan,

tackle Shaun Rogers, a free agent New Orleans picked up prior to the lockout, and undrafted free agent defensive tackle Dexter Larimore who signed this week out of Ohio State.
