New Orleans Saints: Takeo Spikes A Good Fit In The Big Easy

Even though Takeo Spikes is 34 years of age, he is still a player who commands respect, just ask teammate Patrick Willis, who has “urged” San Francisco to bring Spikes back next season.

The Saints are looking at free agent linebackers that can help them right now, and i think Takeo Spikes may be just what the doctor ordered, he has more than proven his self in this league.

He plays with a lot of heart, and right now the Saints need someone to team-up with Jonathan Vilma in the middle. Spikes played in all 16 games during the 2010 campaign for the 49′ers and recorded 109 tackles and 3 interceptions.

He has astounding career numbers since coming into the league, while playing for several teams he has 816 tackles, 27.5 quarterback sacks and 16 interceptions.

The Cincinnati Bengals drafted Spikes with the 13th pick in the first round of the 1998 draft. He left the Bengals after the 2002 season via free agency, and joined the Buffalo Bills where he played until the conclusion of the 2006 season.

He then signed with the Eagles for the 2007 season, joining the 49er’s afterwards in 2008 where he has been a starter ever since.

The Saints have two free agent linebackers to either re-sign or release, Scott Shanle who started and played 14 games in 2010 recording 76 tackles, no sacks or interceptions, and is 31 years of age.

The other linebacker to evaluate is Danny Clark who started 10 games and played in 14 games recorded 59 tackles with no sacks or interceptions,  and who by the way is 34 years old, same as Takeo Spikes.

I think rookies Martez Wilson (3rd round) and Nate Bussey (7th round), both from Illinois, would  be able to learn from a veteran like Spikes who has proven he can be ultra productive in the NFL.

Takeo Spikes has played for 13 years in the NFL and deserves a chance at the brass ring, come on down to New Orleans and go for it. We need you to help us bring another Super Bowl title to the Saints.
