Happy birthday to the United States and a thank you to our forefathers, especially Thomas Jefferson, for penning and commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, which declared our independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. – famous line of the Declaration of Independence.
My present to the Who Dat nation for the day is a recipe for the “Who Dat Highball”, a concoction thought up prior to the Saints Super Bowl XLIV appearance.
Who Dat Highball:
2 oz. cognac
1 oz. apple-lemon syrup
Fill highball glass with ice. Pour in cognac and syrup. Top off with club soda and garnish with a lemon wheel.
(enough for 10 cocktails)
1 1/2 cups water
1 apple–cored, peeled and cut into pieces
zest of half a lemon (just the peel, no white pith)
1 cup sugar
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and boil. Strain out solids and pour the syrup into a container. Cool syrup and refrigerate. To make syrup last longer, add a 1/2 oz. of vodka.
