In my first interview for WDD, New Orleans Saints: Superfan Interview With HALO SAINT, I thought I was pretty fortunate to be able to connect with one of the fabled Superfans for the Saints, HALO SAINT.
I figured that maybe that would be it. Little did I know that interview would lead me to my second interview with another Superfan. And this one would take me to the Dark Side. Well, sort of.
My interview with HALO SAINT (Ray) took me on a “Six Degree’s of Kevin Bacon” style journey. Ray actually knew several of the Superfans and kept in pretty good contact with them. One of them I knew I had to interview was Superfan and Ray’s good friend, Darth Saint.
Anyone who remember’s the Star Wars prequel “The Phantom Menace” will agree that the one thing that saved the movie was a thrilling light-saber battle between Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), Jedi apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), and Sith apprentice Darth Maul(Ray Park).
I can recall sitting in a packed theater when the two Jedi were trying to escape from a space hanger. Suddenly, two bay doors opened and a close-up of Darth Maul was shown. Horns protruding from his head, yellow/red eyes glaring Darth Maul wielded a Star Wars geek’s Excalibur equivalent double-bladed light-saber.
Cheers erupted from the audience, but not for the Jedi. People gasped and yelled as Darth Maul spin-kicked and used his double-bladed light-saber with scary perfection. This type of reaction is exactly what Superfan Darth Saint goes for when other teams are on the field.
