New Orleans just pulled the trigger on their sixth and final draft selection, takling Illinois linebacker Nate Bussey with the 243rd pick overall.
Bussey is the second Illionois linebacker taken by the Saints this draft, as they made linebacler Martez Wilson their third round selection yesterday. In fact the teams scouting of Wilson likely led them to Bussey.
Primarily a special teams contributor at Illinois he was not awarded a starting position until he senior season in 2010. He responded by making 69 tackles, 6.5 for a loss, one sack, one interception, three fumble recoveries and a blocked punt as an outside linebacker.
The previous three seasons Bussey totaled 74 combined tackles.
It’s safe to assume that the Saints don’t view Bussey as one who will crack the starting lineup quickly, or perhaps not at all, in his first few years in the league.
Likely he will be relegated to a backup role and special teams contributor. However his developlent under the Saints coaches, coupled with his reported strong work ethic, could increase his chances to be promoted
