After the injury to running back Reggie Bush and the news he will be lost for six weeks with a broken fibula the Saints were left looking for answers with only two healthy running backs left on the roster.
The answer for the Saints was to resign running back Ladell Betts who was released in the teams final roster cut after spending most of the preseason in New Orleans.
Betts appeared sporadically in two preseason games with the Saints rushing nine times for 53 yards and catching seven passes for 24 yards.
Given the opportunity Betts has proven he can handle the role of a featured backs rushing for 1,154 yards with the Redskins in 2006 and excelled in the role of third down back once Clinton Portis took over the starting spot.
He was brought in Tuesday for a “workout” but his familiarity with the Saints offense made him the natural choice for added depth at running back.
Betts will come aboard and immediately be used as the number three back heading into the Saints first division game against the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday.
