The 2009 Pro Bowl roster has been released, the Saints are sending five players which is the most in the NFC South and third overall in the NFC. Quarter back Drew Brees, elected to his fourth Pro Bowl will start for the NFC squad. Brees lead the Saints to thirteen straight victories throwing for 4,388 yards with 34 touchdowns, only 11 interceptions and a 109.6 passer rating. New Orleans had two separate chances to secure home field advantage through the play-offs on their own, with wins against the Cowboys followed by the Buccaneers but couldn’t close it out against either opponent losing both contests by a combined ten points. The Saints have tasted defeated for the second straight week falling to Tampa in over time 20-17 after kicker Garrett Hartley missed a chip shot field goal with nine seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. New Orleans again could have sewn up home field advantage with a win, but again the offense struggled mightily as the defense crumbled against a sub-par offense. New Orleans suffered it’s first loss of the season last Saturday when hosting the Dallas Cowboys, a 24-17 disappointment for the Saints. It wasn’t a total loss however as they did not need to win  in hopes of a play-off berth, as did Dallas, that’s been assured for a few weeks now. The Saints announced today they have cut kicker John Carney, a former Pro Bowler, from the roster after kicker Garrett Hartley resumed the starting duties. A former Saint Carney was brought back before the start of the regular season after Hartley violated the leagues substance abuse policy after testing positive for Adderall, he was then suspened for the first four games of the season. Carney remained the Saints starting kicker even after Hartley’s return until week 12 after a miss against the Patriots, he would go 17 of 13 on field goals and 50 of 52 on extra points in his twelve appearences. A normally dominant home team the Saints went into lasts night game the strong favorite over the waining Dallas Cowboys, four quarters later the Saints were left asking what went wrong when starting at a 24-17 score in favor of Dallas. The Saints didn’t really need this game though, they have already secured a play-off spot, but Dallas on the other hand needed a win to keep their play-off hopes alive. No match-up this week in the NFL has brought more discussion than Saturday’s Cowboys – Saints match-up, set to take place in a packed New Orleans Superdome. The Saints (13-0) are currently preparing for a desperate Cowboys (8-5) team looking for the back door into the play-offs, Dallas is currently sitting on yet another December decline and an 0-2 record to date. Saints quarter back Drew Brees has lead his team to it’s most successful season in franchise history, a perfect 13-0 record en-route to their first play-off appearance in two years. Currently there are three major candidates for the MVP award, Payton Manning of the Colts, Chris Johnson of the Titans and of course Drew Brees. Manning also heads a 13-0 team and statistically ranks at or near the top in the major categories for a quarter back, but as of late has slowed down just a bit tossing three interceptions against the Broncos last week. New Orleans (13-0) was able to hold off a surging second quarter Falcon’s team and narrowly escape with a win, 26-23, to keep the hopes of a perfect 16-0 season alive. Hopefully the trend of close games stops after this win as the Saints were able to come back from a ten point deficit in the fourth quarter against the Redskins to pull out the victory with an overtime field goal last week.
