New Orleans Saints: Defensive Coordinator Gregg Willliams Q&A

by 2009 Training Camp

Gregg WilliamsIt’s been quite some time since anyone has heard from the Saints new DC Gregg Williams, partly imposed by the team, and partly imposed by Williams himself.

In fact its been over four months since he spoke with the media last, and after the performance his defense put on during the first day of camp, you can bet there are plenty of questions.

Williams adamantly rejects the notion that he is the savior of the Saints defense, which he was deemed by media and fans alike upon his arrival.

Instead he chooses to acknowledge the fact he is only as good as his players play, and there is still a lot for everyone to learn.

He had quite a bit to say about the team, the defenses progress, and his expectations moving forward. Some of the highlights include:

  • Every position is available for the taking as everyone is trying out, there are no starters.
  • The defense is better than what the media had given them credit for in the last year.
  • He will adjust his defense to the players talents, not the other way around.
  • Positions will rotate and he expects the players to be versatile – corners have to play safety, safeties have to play corner, linebackers have to play defensive end, and defensive ends have to play linebacker.
  • Only those who work hard every day and produce results will win a starting role.

There is quite a bit more to his Q&A session, too much to re-iterate here. If you would like to see the entire conversation visit this link to the post on the Saints website.
